Oh My Edward!

“I never anticipated that Rob would end up looking like the actor in my head. When he’s Rob, he’s just Rob, and he’s funny…and then, at the snap of a finger, he just switches into Edward, and it’s kind of an amazing transformation to watch.”

—Stephenie Meyer

At San Diego’s Comic-Con in July 2008, Rob was asked what attracted him to the role, but there was so much screaming he said he couldn’t concentrate. Try as he might to be a Serious Actor, and come up with a distinguished, thoughtful, meaningful answer, all the adoring attention was just too much for this shy sweetheart. So he gave up. What else could he do? With a bashful, but tickled smile, he said, “I just wanted to play the hottest vampire in the world. It hurts me to think of myself.” Not only can this cutie play a century-old vampire with startling intensity, but he can look at the astonishing attention being heaped on him with a level head and tongue-in-cheek wit.

How did Robert Thomas-Pattinson get chosen for the sacred role of Edward Anthony Masen Cullen? Well, to say that the auditions were competitive is putting it mildly. More than five thousand professional actors auditioned for the role! Let’s back up for just a second, though, to see how the role of Edward in a movie version of Twilight even came into existence. Not terribly long after Twilight was published, Stephenie Meyer sold the rights to produce the movie to Paramount’s MTV films. Much to her dismay, the script they developed for the movie was completely unlike the books. In fact, as Stephenie later told Entertainment Weekly interviewers, “They could have put that movie out, called it something else, and no one would have known it was Twilight.” Stephenie couldn’t let that happen, since she knew her loyal Twilighters would never stand for it. So after Paramount’s option expired, Stephenie was nervous about letting anyone even think about producing a movie of one of her books again. But then Eric Feig, president of production at Summit Entertainment, set out on a mission to change her mind. Eventually he convinced a hesitant Stephenie that his vision for a movie matched hers. The clincher was a guarantee he made to her. The contract his company signed with her included a promise that “no vampire character will be depicted with canine or incisor teeth longer or more pronounced than may be found in human beings,” and other key non-negotiable points that Stephenie insisted on for the integrity of her books—and that Summit happily agreed to. And so, in July 2007, Stephenie and Summit Entertainment announced that Twilight would be going into production.

Instantly fans began to theorize for hours on end about which actors might fill the roles. They knew from reading Stephenie’s website and from various interviews and chats with her on fan sites that she had someone in particular marked as her first choice. She knew that authors didn’t usually get any say in
